We San Franciscans definitely have our own brand of humor, and that brand is hilarious. But for those who like nerding out on silly stuff, the Humor Research Lab (HuRL) ranked the 50 funniest cities in the U.S., and San Francisco rounded out the top ten (Chicago, Boston, and Atlanta took gold, silver, and bronze).
HuRL is led by scientist Peter McGraw at the University of Colorado Boulder, and his team spent nine months studying the HA, or Humor Algorithm, which takes into account comedy clubs per square mile, the quality of comedians that come to town, how often residents check out humorous stuff online and on the radio, and the number of famous funny people who live here.
Among their comedy factoids, the team somehow decided that in San Francisco locals choose funny friends over funny lovers, a discovery that starts with a flawed premise – in this city you tend to have a lot of both, especially if you've slept with most of your friends.
