Canada's Smoke's Poutinerie has opened its first US location in Berkeley and if their website is right, "you'll think you've died and gone to Canada!" According to Eater, Smoke's is quite popular in its Canadian homeland and has plans to open other locations in California, including one in Hollywood in early 2015. The menu at Smoke's offers traditional hand-cut fries, Quebec cheese curds, and gravy as well as a wide array of other less-traditional meat and topping options like pierogis, jalapeños, guacamole, and much more.
You can order poutines on the menu in one of three box sizes: snack size ($4.99), meal size ($6.99), and WOW size ($10.99). The poutine-only dining establishment had a line down the street on the opening day of its Durant Avenue location, which is super duper close to the UC Berkeley campus. The portions look generous and the restaurant plans to be open from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily, making it a great addition to Berkeley's late night drunchie options or just a decadent and comforting snack.
