How NOT to Drive on the Golden Gate Bridge

When it rains in the Bay Area, people suddenly forget how to drive. Common sense goes out the window and people go into some weird survival mode, where they act as if they’re the only car on the road. A perfect example of this happened this morning on the Golden Gate Bridge. According to the CHP, at around 5 a.m., Daniel Soto, the driver of a snazzy blue Mustang, was heading southbound on 101 into San Francisco at a high rate of speed when he left the conventional lanes. Apparently he decided he didn’t want to be like everyone else and drive normally. No, what he wanted to do was to crash his car on the pedestrian walkway.

His car left the roadway, driving onto the sidewalk, becoming lodged between the retaining barrier and fence used to protect the bridge. That should come as no surprise, considering how slim that path is. Luckily no one was seriously injured, but now emergency crews, and engineers have to figure the best possible solution in dislodging the stranded vehicle with the least amount of traffic disruption, which is no easy feat. I couldn’t wrap my head around this, wondering how the hell it happened, especially considering that he had to crash through a barrier AND a steel gate. After being treated at a hospital for minor injuries, Soto was arrested on potential DUI charges, so that answers that.

There are two morals to this story: the first and foremost is to NEVER drink and drive because you never know where you might get stuck. And the second lesson is to not be a dick when driving in the rain. Remember all you learned in driver’s ed and use it please. Or you could, you know, just be careful.
