Have you watched the three new installments of High Maintenance yet? The magical online series about a weed dealer who’s buddy and therapist to his customers is back on Vimeo, which is testing out original web TV with these shows. Watch it — unless you hate smart, well acted, precisely written, funny shows where people get weird. In that case, watch CNN.
For everyone else who knows there’s plenty to mine from modern stoner culture, you can burn through the previous clever, hilarious 13 episodes rather fast, since each show ranges in time from 6-15 minutes.
High Maintenance follows a genial pot dealer, known only as “The Guy,” as he delivers pot to customers who in live in ridiculously expensive Brooklyn shoe boxes. The Guy is the only constant here, and we are with him as he drops off his stashes to his regulars, discovering the many reasons people are blazing up. Loneliness. A date. Illness. Depression. A party.
Co-creator Ben Sinclair portrays The Guy with an easy, chilled out charm. With his receding hairline and bushy beard, I imagine he smells like skunky herb and cookies. The writers have created unremarkable characters going through complicated emotions. Then added weed. A recipe that works surprisingly well.
