Twitter Skybridge Saves Employees From Street

High on recent success and profits, Twitter now sees the sky as the literal limit. In that Icarian spirit, the company is connecting new office space in a building next to its 1355 Market St. headquarters ... with a #skybridge.

This isn't Chicago or Minneapolis, where such elevated walkways are common. In fact, a pleasant breeze on Market would could perhaps do a bit of good for screen-staring employees. But 140-character-or-less Twitter is about efficiency in all things.

For Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, this is no flight of fancy: employees will save precious seconds of their busy day. Not least, they'll be spared the mental strain of unromantic Mid-Market encounters with ... well, anyone.

As Twitter told Bloomberg in a statement: "It’s simple efficiency – it would take at least five minutes per employee to go down an elevator, out of one building, into the other, and up the elevator to the right floor.” Added the company: “We have a commitment to this neighborhood, and are building an urban campus that works for our employees and the community all the same.”

The San Francisco Planning Department has received plans for the project, and we'll inevitably update you on #skybridge.

Not everything is symbolic, but lofty architecture is — and in this case, the #skybridge metaphor doesn't look good for Twitter, sending a message of élitism and community disassociation.

@mayoredlee, are they getting a tax break on this, too?
