Alien She is a new exhibition at YBCA documenting and reflecting on the legacy of Riot Grrrls because punk feminism is everything. The exhibit is made up of works by seven artists whose creative outputs have been informed by the values of female and youth empowerment, activism, and equality.
The show also includes an expansive collection of handmade zines, posters, and more artifacts of unfiltered '90s girl power. Some of the badass people showing their work include Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Tammy Rae Carland, Miranda July, Faythe Levine, Allyson Mitchell, L.J. Roberts, and Stephanie Syjuco.
Alien She opened October 24 and runs through January 25 BUT you should seriously consider seeing the exhibit on November 20 when YBCA will be hosting Converge: Grrrl Power. The free event will include a free self-defense workshop lead by Oakland collective Girl Army, a performance by Party Bus of the The Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, and an art-making station. Everyone is invited to use Miranda July's Somebody's app and have the best night of their lives.
So get planning your visit now! If you go today, it's free (because it's the first Tuesday of the month) and you can see the gallery's hours and other pricing here.
