It's probably no surprise to hear that San Francisco Opera has a costume shop that blows all others out of the water. SF Opera has an extensive collection of amazing, elaborate, and period-specific outfits from their productions. But what you might not know is that you can actually buy some of these costumes.
For the fifth time in about 90 years, San Francisco Opera is holding a giant sale of their unique bounty of clothing and accessories. Items include medieval, biblical, Renaissance, and 18th century costumes; modern and vintage clothing; conceptual and fantasy outfits "that defy description;" along with crafting supplies to make your one-of-a-kind creation. Some of the pieces for sale were worn by famous opera stars, and some were created by famous designers, like Gianni Versace (or you might know him as "Ver-sayss").
San Francisco Opera Costume Shop Sale takes place at 800 Indiana Street (between 20th and 22nd Streets) on Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, March 23, from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. It's totally free, but you should clear your plans for the day and get there EARLY. SF Opera Communication Manager Robin Freeman explained to me, "The last time we did this type of sale there were lines around the block so we always expect a fantastic turn out... San Franciscans definitely love their costumes!"
