A friend of mine was just joking yesterday that there should be a toilet-sharing service called Airpnp. But apparently someone else thought of that first and made Airpnp, an experimental service where residents and businesses can rent out their bathrooms to those in need. People can use the app to locate an available restroom, and as with Airbnb, users can rate their experience. At the time of writing this blog post, there were only two rentable toilets in California – one of which was a block away from Dolores Park – but I have a feeling several more will crop up as word spreads, especially during festival season.
Speaking of which, a street festival was the inspiration for Airpnp. The service was founded by two New Orleans entrepreneurs, Travis Laurendine and Max Gaudin, who noted the lack of legit places to pee during Mardi Gras. As some unfortunate souls have learned, relieving yourself on the street in New Orleans is illegal and will land you in the clink. Laurendine and Gaudin saw Mardi Gras as a "golden opportunity" (their pun, not mine) to push their new app; Airpnp will launch today for Mardi Gras.
The Airpnp website (and name) only talks about peeing, but let's be real. Airpnp will surely accomodate poogencies as well. I'm curious whether using the service for #2 will give users a poor rating, especially since clogged toilets and overflows are sure to happen should this service actually be legit and take off. I'll guess we'll just have to wait and see.
