What did you do for your last milestone birthday? I threw a get-together in my cramped apartment, where my friend DJ’d on his laptop and we drank cheap 30-racks of PBR. We were too loud, and the cops came and made us be quiet around 10:00 p.m., so that was that.
What I wish, though, is that I could have had it somewhere where it wouldn’t have gotten broken up. Maybe somewhere with high ceilings and stunning classical-meets-modern architecture. And, like, with live dancers and performers? Perhaps with even several millennia of awe-inspiring art on three floors, both ancient and contemporary.
No, I’m not planning a National Treasure–esque heist. I’m just thinking about the Asian Art Museum’s Solid Gold Party, which is essentially just that. And the cops definitely won’t kick you out of this one for a noise violation.
The Asian Art Museum’s 50th Anniversary Party is a glitzy and campy Solid Gold-themed party with a whole slew of performers, including beauties from AsiaSF, Disco Energi, Non Stop Bhangra, Mix’d Ingrdnts and Jay Loyola Dance.
Best of all, the Solid Gold ticket gives you access to the art too. If you get sweaty from dancing, take a stroll through the galleries. The Asian Art Museum’s world-renowned collection encompasses a huge span of cultures and eras. It’s worth celebrating that such a monumental and utterly San Franciscan cultural institution is hitting the half-century mark.
If you go, don’t forget to don your own gold duds—the dancers and everyone else will be as gilded as a Golden Snitch. Tickets are cheap too—only $20 or free for members. It’s all going down on Thursday, March 3, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Readers of The Bold Italic can get $5 off at checkout with the coupon code “GOLDENTICKET.” Buy your tickets here.
