Do This With Your Sister Friday

Has it been a little while since you kicked it with that person that totally gets you and thus sometimes totally annoys you, because they totally get you? This Friday night can be your perfect chance to hang out with your sister (or one of those BFFs that functions like a sister). The Magic Theatre is hosting a special performance of the new Sister Playwritten and directed by John Kolvenbach, special Next Gen tickets are just $25. Sure, you can see this comedy with a heart of gold many nights now through April 19, but tickets are really a steal for this Friday and why freakin’ wait? To receive your special $25 NextGen tickets, enter code: NEXTGEN at the time of check out.

You’re probably wondering what exactly you’ll be getting you and your sister-date into. Sister Play tells the fictional but real-feeling story of two sisters taking some time away from their lives in their late father’s Cape Cod cabin. One brings their husband and the other makes a connection with a mystery date, she meets on the side of the road – literally. There’s also some sisterly protectionist actions and healthy dose of honest, vulnerable dialogue that makes the audience think, “oh crap, that is just like us.” In a good way!

People with sisters are just going to get Sister Play. No one can smile and nod knowingly or laugh darkly at the salty sweet love that exists between two family members, like the people who understand the difference between being a big sister versus a little sister, because they’ve lived it. Kolvenbach is also uniquely well-positioned to tell a smart, funny story about the trials and rewards of having and caring for sisters because after all, the guy has five of them. The veteran writer and director knows the sometimes weird and almost overly-intimate world that families and specifically sisters create and inhabit and is able to do justice to the sometimes intimidating bond that two people with so much history and deeply-rooted connection share.

Obviously, one night at the theatre can not mend a ten-year long feud between you and that person you shared a bunk bed with, but it’s not crazy to think that sharing an evening of drinks and entertainment at Fort Mason Center could make for one of those really, really good nights with your sis. Only in San Francisco can you have such a lovely evening of live performance, drinks, and good company all with the added bonus of silly-majestic views of the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s almost too much.

Lastly, if you don’t have a sister, we are so sorry that you’re missing out. Kidding! You can still attend and take a glimpse into the sometimes creepy but mostly tender world of sisters. Sister Play is produced by the Magic Theatre and is a fantastic way to dip your toe into San Francisco’s artistic community and support a truly special creative force here.
