I used to hate on Live 105's BFD fest and would just chalk it up to being mainstream radio fodder bands. But over the past few years, I’ve stopped being such a damn hipster and realized that the good peeps at Live 105 put together well-thought out lineups that cater to a variety of musical tastes. And 2015’s BFD, the 21st rendition of the event, looks nothing short of promising.
The festival takes place at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on Saturday, June 6th and a quick glance at the artists in play will show why it’s worth the drive, wherever you’re coming from. Here’s what we’re excited about:
Modest Mouse
Did you hear me?! I said MODEST MOUSE! Isaac Brock and company are one of the most iconic indie bands of the last two decades and they’ll have a new album in tow, Strangers to Ourselves (their first album in eight years!) Every Modest Mouse live set comes well-equipped with classics from the epic The Moon And Antarctica, The Lonesome Crowded West, and yes, even “Float On.” Any way you slice it up, this is a solid headliner.
Kick-Ass Local Acts
It’s cool to see so many Bay Area bands on the bill that have transcended the up and coming Soundcheck Local Band Stage. This year, TBI favorites and SF-locals Cathedrals will be gracing the Festival Stage after two smashing sold-out performances at last week’s Noise Pop Festival, playing along with Norway-cum-SF band WATERS.
In the electro-inspired Subsonic Tent, Campbell, CA’s The Limousines will be bringing their dance-pop stylings along with the Bay’s digital-rap queen, K.Flay. Keep an eye out for SF indie rock orchestra, The Family Crest, on the Local Band Stage, who crushed it at Noise Pop.
Death From Above 1979
Loud, bass guitar-driven, and accessible Canadian punks DFA1979 are gonna get rowdy. They totally rocked Treasure Island a few years ago and dropped a rager of a comeback album in last year’s The Physical World. It’s a lot of noise from two dudes. Put “Romantic Rights” in your speakers in lieu of that second cup of coffee. You’re welcome.
More Main Stage Pleasantries
Ok, go ahead and file Of Monsters and Men as a guilty pleasure. If you’re not responsible for one of the 133 million Youtube plays on “Little Talks,” then you’ve surely heard the cello-driven version of the song on a Coke commercial. Translation: The Icelandic quintet has become one of the biggest acts in the world.
Australian indie-pop band Atlas Genius is a solid act who got big on the heels of “Trojans,” aka, that song you heard everywhere you went for months until you finally discovered who sings it and added it to all your playlists. They’re a lot of fun and a welcome addition to the Main Stage.
Robert DeLong
Alas, here lies our early favorite for dance party of the fest. LA’s DeLong splashed onto the scene with the infectious “Global Concepts” and went dub-step-pop with flavor of the moment single “Long Way Down.”
Cheap Tickets
You can get into the fest for under $40. Sure. (Might be a smidge more with service charges, but don’t shoot the messenger.)
