I'll just come out and say it, I love the Oscars. There's something about the pageantry, the glitz, and the music that never fails to excite and inspire me. I like to get a bunch of champagne, lots of snacks, and watch the whole damn thing. It's like the Superbowl of pop culture.
If the Academy Awards is your Superbowl too (or if you just want to make sure you watch it so you can understand what people are referencing on Monday) here are the places in SF where you can catch the big game. Just try to keep it classy and not end up like this statue at the end of the night.
Kezar Pub
Kezar Pub has long been the go to pub for watching any sport from cricket to football so it seems fitting that they'll be showing my favorite sport (beautiful women giving speeches) on Sunday. Their Oscar party starts at 4 p.m. and will feature bingo and other games with prizes and beer specials. There will also be a red carpet that you can take pictures on.
Soma StrEAT Food Park
Guys, Neil Patrick Harris will be at this free event! Well ok, his wax statue will be here, but that's basically just as good — plus if you're really good at taking selfies no one will know the difference. The Soma StrEAT Food Park's party features a betting pool, drink specials, free popcorn, and all the pics you can take of Neil Wax-trick Harris. Twenty five bucks will get you VIP entrance with all you can drink champagne, which is good because Sunday isn't really Sunday without copious champagne consumption. Also this event will take place rain or shine, they've got a heated barn, y'all.
Novela
For Novela's Oscar party you'll want to dress to impress. This free event is for people who want to come costumed as their favorite movie character or in their red carpet finest. There will be specialty cocktails, fancy ass popcorn, and the awards will be showing on two screens so you don't miss a second of the action.
Balboa Theatre
What better place to watch the Superbowl of movies than an actual theatre? The Balboa Theatre is hosting a party complete with a costume contest (clever, pun based costumes encouraged) with prizes and other games. For the price of a movie ticket you can come and watch the show on their giant screens.
Bistro Grill
Sure you could watch the awards at home in your sweatpants but doesn't it just feel fancier to go out? Watching the Oscars in a swank setting is like swilling a scotch while watching Mad Men: it just puts you right in the action. The Bistro Grill will be hosting a viewing party where you can watch the show and nom on their gourmet burgers and fancy milkshakes.
Oasis
If I can't have Joan Rivers making snarky comments on the red carpet (rest in paradise, you filthy angel) having drag queens offer commentary the next best thing. Oasis is throwing an Oscar party complete with pre show live judging of the red carpet. There will be a champagne toast and passed apps and everyone is encouraged to dress festively. I have a feeling this is going to be the cattiest, most fabulous party this Sunday so be there or be talked about behind your back.
