Battle of the '90s Shows Comes to the Roxie Tonight

The Roxie theater is hosting an epic face off of '90s television blocks tonight as part of SFIndiefest. They seek to answer the question of the ages: Which was better, ABC's TGIF or Nickelodeon's SNICK?

Official Indiefest programmer Mike Keegan describes this event as "a middle school sleepover vibe magically transported inside of a Mission District movie house." To that end, they'll be showing episodes from TGIF's greatest year (1990) and SNICK's best year (1993). From there, Keegan says that he'll be "throwing shows at each other in a Mortal Kombat-style fight to the death to determine the ultimate victor" and the audience is encouraged to participate in a live debate.

For those of you who lived under a rock during the '90s (or whose moms wouldn't let them stay up that late) these networks had the two coolest lineups for weekend watching. In one corner you have TGIF with classics like Full HouseDinosaurs, and Family Matters, and in the other you have SNICK( Saturday Night Nick, get it?) with heavy hitters like All That, Ren and Stimpy, and The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

For twelve bucks you can watch and weigh in, though is there really a contest? It's SNICK all the way. Keegan agrees with me and says that it's likely he'll need an audience volunteer to represent Team TGIF in the debate. I mean Full House and Growing Pains were cool (lord knows I had the hots for Kirk Camerson before he got religious and weird) but ABC programming was so tame compared to SNICK. Ren and Stimpy basically paved the way for the raunchy cartoon shows we love today. All That was our gateway drug to the word of sketch comedy. If the two channels had a real life Battle Royale, SNICK would kick ass hands down. You think Steve Urkel could beat Alex Mac? No way, because Alex Mack could turn into that goo from the Capri Sun commercials and win! No Steve, you did NOT do that!

Keegan adds that "to complete the middle school sleepover vibe, we might have to get into Mom & Dad's liqour cabinet" — so basically this will be THE event the kids are talking about at school on monday.

Hit up this cool event tonight and pregame by letting us know who you think should win in the comments.
