Are you sitting at your desk thinking how you’re just another cog in the machine, with no purpose in life and wondering how you can disrupt something? Well, look no further than a new board game made just for you: Startups of San Francisco.
The board game, which works similarly to Settlers of Catan, lets anyone put themselves in the shoes of a startup. With a printed map of San Francisco, a player picks a place to build their startup and tries to place it all over the city, particularly in color-coded areas that represent Coffee, Talent, Inspiration, Users, and Coin. Players also roll dice to collect resources to expand your startup. Beware though, “fun events that happen” include earthquakes, bikes getting stolen in the Tenderloin, and of course, the tech bubble bursting. You can also just get a "Growth Hacking Card" to acquire more startups.
The three guys who invented this game have set up a page on Indiegogo, promising anyone that shares the link, will get a PDF of the game and all its pieces for free. Any money that they do collect will be donated to charity. So far, that amount is at $50. If you still don't quite understand what's going on, they break it down in a YouTube video below.
I know, nothing is quite as fulfilling as working at a non-profit or you know, remembering that there’s nothing fun about the changing demographics in San Francisco due to the tech boom and other factors. But, being a disrupter has its own struggles.
What are you waiting for? There is no time like now to make San Francisco your playground, or rather your startup’s playground.
