People who don't live in the Bay Area have been talking about crazy cheap gas prices, like close to $2.50 a gallon. We haven't seen prices that low here in San Francisco in ages, but you will see prices close to, and even under, $3 a gallon right now. I decided to look into which stations in San Francisco proper sell the cheapest gas and found a few for under $3 listed on San Francisco Gas Prices.*
Topping the list is no surprise: the famously cheap ARCO at 1175 Fell Street (at Divisadero). You know, the one that makes biking on that street really, really scary because of the line of cars waiting to get in? Right now, they're selling regular (their cheapest grade) for $2.89 a gallon! Midgrade is $2.99 and Premium is $3.09 a gallon. A couple of other ARCOs in SF are selling for the same deal at 5898 Mission St. and 1200 Geneva St. The ARCO at 1798 Mission St selling gas for slightly more: $2.99 (regular) to $3.19 (premium).
The last choices for under $3 a gallon have a catch. If you pay cash, you can get regular grade gas for $2.95 a gallon at Gas and Shop at 1101 Junipero Serra and Ocean Ave Service Station at 1490 Ocean Ave, and for $2.99 a gallon at Gas and Shop at 599 S Van Ness.
Did I miss any gas stations in SF that sell regular unleaded for less than $3 a gallon? Let us all know in the comments section. And, of course, if you want to save some money (and the earth), ride your bike or walk when you can!
* I attempted to call each of the gas stations to confirm their current prices, but many refused to answer my question. When I'd ask, I'd either get put on hold and then my call would mysteriously get dropped, or some people would just straight up hang up on me. Props to the friendly guy at Ocean Ave Service Station who DID answer me and who's offering gas for $2.95 a gallon – you guys rule!
