The bitches are back. The first two episodes of season three of Girls aired last night and HBO made them available on Youtube for free. First impression: The season premieres could have used more Ray, but then I think that about every episode. Second impression: this is the season of addressing the haters. Many of the grievances I've had with the women of Girls were aired by minor characters, and their criticisms felt damn good to watch. (Spoiler alert)
Hannah is finally doing well. Even when Adam's ex Natalia shits all over her, it doesn't get our girl down (although I could see that cat fight bubbling up again later, because it was gnarly). Speaking of which, during that unfortunate coffee shop run-in, Adam had to answer for disappearing on Natalia after he told her he loved her. I was wondering if the season break would give the guy an unfair douchebag pass, and was happy he didn't get one. I was with Natalia up until the point when she realized Hannah is Adam's new girlfriend and became reflexively pissed that she wasn't left for someone prettier.
But really, these these two episodes were all about Jessa, who is as infuriating as usual. I mean who the fuck throws away a plate instead of washing it? And why does she think people don't know what UGGs are? And when is she going to open up and tell us what her real deal is? The scenes that really made me want to murder Jessa, though, came when she outed Laura (Danielle Brooks, from Orange Is The New Black), another women in her rehab clinic, and then refuses to even entertain the idea that she has daddy issues (or any issues). Luckily, Laura is a boss for throwing coffee in Jessa's face.
Sadly, the scene with Jessa going down on Laura reminded me who's boss in any Girls-viewing experience. It's Lena Dunham, and this time I wasn't sure what that scene was supposed to symbolize in her world. Did anyone else think the super casual way Jessa approached this act of "charity" cunnilingus bordered on a warning sign of sexual abuse? I couldn't relate.
Still, the most surprising thing that happened during the season kickoff was Shoshanna's hair. It's no longer perfect. In the first two seasons, she never had a hair out of place, so what gives with that greasy, curly, messy look happening in the back seat of Hannah's rental car? Perhaps it's foreshadowing Shoshanna's arc – now that she's graduating college, this could be a messy season for Shosh. Guess, we'll have to wait and see.
Need a reason for living? I will be giving my two cents on all this season's episodes. Check back for a new one every Monday.
