If you haven’t been to the third floor of Britex Fabrics in Union Square to see the endless buttons, trims, pompoms, and laces, you are doing life wrong. Britex is a cherished SF institution because of its quality products, such as Japanese fabrics, Belgian linen, wool tweeds, and, yes, off-the-runway silk prints! Any designer worth their weight in silk knows the dreamy four-story shop, which has been in the city for over 60 years. You can see why it demands such respect from the Bay Area creative community.
We’re excited to let you in on some news: Britex is having a Black Friday sale on this Friday, November 28, and the brick-and-mortar store will be offering 30% off all day. Still even more-exciting news: Britex now offers workshops led by local designers and artists you may already know. The next workshop is Warp x Weft: Textile 101 on Saturday, January 17. Anyone with any level of experience is welcome to attend, learn about fiber types, and become a smarty-pants about all different fabrics. You will make your own swatch book, and there will be lots of samples to touch! Yay, touching!
Britex is also holding a block printing class on Saturday, January 31. Future offerings will include opportunities to gain unique skills such as leatherworking and hand-stitching buttonholes and special hems for silks. These classes are a great way to expand a new business by learning new skills and becoming a more informed and ethical shopper, and they would make for excellent gifts for a crafty or curious loved one.
Britex Fabrics is a pretty magical place. It’s a family-run San Francisco landmark, and their store is so abundant and impressive that their team even offers tours on Saturdays.
