There was a time when finding a Margaret Keane painting — an original or one of the many knockoffs — at a thrift store was the holy grail. Her doe-eyed little girls and boys from the '60s are the essence of kitsch, offering equal parts camp and melancholy. Now I can't even imagine finding her work for cheap, as the paintings she created during her years in San Francisco have come back in vogue so many times. And with the tortured story of her becoming an artist in this great city – only to have her husband take credit for her work – coming to the big screen this winter, I imagine the value of her iconic paintings will skyrocket once again.
Here is the trailer for the upcoming Tim Burton biopic on Keane, Big Eyes, starring the awesome Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz as Margaret and Walter Keane.
