With so many new buildings going up all around the city, it's sometimes easy to forget how old San Francisco really is. A few days ago, I came across a Reddit post about a cartoon map of the city drawn by Harrison Godwin in 1927. Unlike many other antique maps of San Francisco, this one is covered in illustrations highlighting points of interest and historical events. The streets are essentially the same and they're all labeled well enough that you can see if your apartment used to be a cemetery, a slaughter house, or an old railroad car barn. Check out the hi-res version on raremaps.com.

The map was originally mass-produced for tourists and I've seen a few different copies online. One was found in the forgotten depths of someone's closet in 2011, and a Redditor mentioned in the comment thread that they had an original framed copy on their wall at home. In 2012, a copy of the map sold on eBay for $1,400. I imagine there are several other copies floating around the Bay Area so keep a weather eye open and you might just stumble upon some historic treasure. If you're not up for digging through antique shops, you can order a new print here. As an added incentive, Reddit user MrSmokesTooMuch (who works for the printing company) has offered a bonus print of his choosing to anyone who buys the Harrison Godwin map. Just send him your order number after you buy it.
