BART Explains Why It Will Never Be 24 Hrs

Those of you still holding out hope that BART will one day run as late and often as trains in other cities, time to face reality. Our major multi-city connector can't go late night because the hours between midnight and 4 a.m. are all about maintaining the trains and tracks.

BART's Alicia Trost tells Next City: “That short window of time without service is used for essential nightly track maintenance. Each night is a race against the clock to get all the maintenance equipment set up, crews in place, work done and then break everything down, and moved out of the way before morning service. Compounding the constraints of a short maintenance window is the fact our system is now four decades old and major components need to be replaced.”

Bummer. Although I'll take safe transport over easy late night rides home from the East Bay any time.
