Huffington Post reports that a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine on the variation of orgasm occurrence by sexual orientation has found that single lesbian women have the highest probability of orgasms compared to other women with different sexual orientations. The study collected data from an internet questionnaire that roughly 6,000 men and women answered, but the analysis of the nationally representative sample was limited to 2,850 responses because researchers did not include data from people who had not had sex in the last 12 months. (Ouch.)
Those who participated were asked to report their sex/gender, their self-identified sexual orientation, and what percentage of times they have an orgasm while having sex with a "familiar partner." The mean reported rate of orgasm for all men was 85.1% of the time while women reported a significantly lower 62.9% number, which doesn't please me, but jives with what I've learned anecdotally. According to what men reported, there isn't a significant difference between the rates of orgasms between gay men (84.7%), straight men (85.5%), and bi men (77.6%). They're all higher than the women's rates.
For ladies however, there is a significant difference in rate of orgasms by who you're into. Lesbian women said that they reach orgasm 74.7% of the time compared to straight women's 61.6% and bi ladies' 58%. The study concluded that "women, regardless of sexual orientation, have less predictable, more varied orgasm experiences than do men and that for women, but not men, the likelihood of orgasm varies with sexual orientation." The researchers also noted that this survey is an example of the need for further exploration of comparative sexual experiences, and as a straight lady, I heartily agree.
