Facebook Experiments With Satire Tags

Telling the difference between serious content and parodies is harder for some people than you might think. According to Mashable, Facebook has been experimenting with tagging satirical content with the tag "[Satire]" at the beginning of headlines that appear as related articles in users' news feeds. Mashable confirmed with Facebook that this is something people have been asking for and the experiment has been going on for about a month.

According to Ars Technica, the tags only appear after you've clicked on a satirical article and then go back to your News Feed; Facebook will tag other related stories from the same website as satire. This is a little odd because you'd think someone who has read The Onion before would know what their content is like.

It's possible that sites like Clickhole have become a little too convincing or maybe people no longer put anything past online media, but for what it's worth, The Bold Italic also flirted with the idea of adding a "Satire" tag not long ago and decided against it because we think you're smart enough to know that things like this (originally published on April 1, 2014) are jokes
