If you love dogs, there's a free festival for you this weekend. A Breed Apart is an event that’s part of Exploratorium Market Days, a series of free mini-festivals that bring artists, educators, and scientists together for fun exhibits and hands-on activities. Happening this Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Exploratorium's public plaza at Pier 15, this show-and-tell features all things related to dogs – real and fictional.

Highlights of the day include scientists and veterinarians discussing how genetics can affect a dog's coat color and behavior, and what can be assessed by examining their skulls; training tips and adoptable dogs from the ASPCA; and an appearance by the three of SF's most famous fictional canines: the Doggie Diner Heads.

There'll also be lots of working canines to meet and watch, including Dogs for Diabetics, service dogs that are trained to recognize and alert owners of changes in blood and sugar levels; FEMA Search and Rescue dogs; and Guide Dogs for the Blind. On the lighter side, the pups from the Canine Circus School and trainer Lynn Ungar and her furry friend Piper will be there doing a little Freestyle Dog Dancing.

Now that's what you call a dog day afternoon!
