A Rebuttal to Tahoe's Jerky "Real Summer" Ads

Alright, everyone knows San Francisco isn’t exactly Cancún-esque when it comes to the summer months, and everyone looooves to talk about how much they miss “real seasons” back home in mid-western wherever. This is all well and good when it comes in the form of commiseration, but when people outside the Bay Area start bashing SF weather, I feel compelled to stand up for my fog-laden peninsula. North Lake Tahoe has been running a billboard campaign in San Francisco with jabs like:

"The good news is, it'll burn off... In October."
"Don't call it Frisco. Or summer." and
"Winter, Spring, Winter, Fall." followed by the tagline, “Real Summer. Real Close.”

Tahoe is pretty cool and I’ll admit their ads are quite clever. Nevertheless, I love summer in San Francisco and here’s a list of reasons why:

  • A time-lapse video of fog rolling over Twin Peaks is the most beautiful thing you’ll ever see 1,000 times.
  • Calling 65° “cold” anywhere else in the country will get you slapped.
  • Ocean. Beach. Bonfires.
  • Sweaters are fucking cozy, OK?
  • Actual hot weather is appreciated so much more when it does come around (and it does come around).
  • Not having to pay an extra $100 a month on air conditioning.
  • Crowded public transport doesn’t feel/smell like a Vietnam-era POW camp.
  • If I want some “real summer” I can take BART to the other side of the bay. Last time I checked, a three hour drive to the Nevada border did not pop up on a Google search for “real close.”

And hey, why don't you talk to us in December when it's 70° here. After all, the Tahoe region doesn't have the best track record when it comes to winters.
