Next 'True Detective' Set in Big Sur?

If the latest rumors coming from The Wrap turn out to be legit, True Detective and Mad Men are about to have more than a bunch of Emmy nominations in common. There’s been a lot of speculation and anticipation surrounding the second season of HBO’s smash hit True Detective, and today, details of the plot have emerged that reveal a significant amount of it takes place in Northern California. Namely, a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur, and if things go the way creator Nic Pizzolatto wants them to, the female lead would be played by none other than Peggy Olson, I mean, Elisabeth Moss.

Moss, who may or may not of been in Big Sur last month with the Mad Men crew, would be the perfect fit for the no-nonsense Monterey sheriff role of Ani Bezzerides, whose troubled upbringing has led to a bit of an issue with drinking and gambling. Watch Moss in Top of the Lake if you need further confirmation that this is 100% up her alley.

According to The Wrap, “The second season of True Detective will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt City Manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amidst a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change the freeway gridlock in California. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it.  They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought."

The other casting rumors go on to name Vince Vaughn for the role of Frank Seymon, a former thug-turned-businessman who’s working with a local Mayor to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system that connects southern and northern California. From Wedding Crashers to federal grants and land purchase scheming? I can’t totally see it because I’ve seen Vaughn in the remake of Psycho. For its part, HBO hasn’t confirmed (or denied, like they did quickly with the Chastain/Pitt rumors) any of the speculation thus far. So let’s keep talking – who would you like to see in the next season of True Detective
