It feels a little insane, setting your alarm to wake up early enough to hit a dance party before work – but I went to Daybreaker's San Francisco premier a few weeks ago and can honestly say it was ridiculously fun. I had no idea that people get up early in this city, like, ever, but the line was down the block at Audio SF by 8:30 a.m. – and upstairs, where all the dancing was happening, people were working the packed floor like it was 1 a.m. There were drag queens, hula hooping girls, a silver robot, a sax player, and a mass of enthusiastic movers. I'd call the first round of this New York-originating party a huge success, so it's no surprise that local organizers Mustafa Khan and Stephanie Lepp are already doing it again.
This Tuesday, July 1, Daybreaker returns with another morning disco pick-me-up, this time at Inner Mission (aka Cellspace) at 2050 Bryant St. The party starts with a 7:30 a.m. yoga warmup, then blasts off into our very own unchoreographed version of aerobics thanks to djesikaSF. Tickets include Blue Bottle coffee from Astronaut Cafe, drinks from Clearly Kombucha and Runa, and, once again, performers and musicians playing live. There's everything here but the booze, and things wind to a close at 9:30 a.m.
At the last Daybreaker, people were dancing so hard the humidity inside made my straight hair wavy by the time I left. Definitely wear something you can sweat in, and bring a change of clothes. Early bird tickets are $20; after Saturday they jump up to $25. I can't think of a better way to bookend a short week than with this early bird disco.
